Frequently Asked Questions About Cooling Systems

When should I have my HVAC system serviced?

You should have your HVAC system serviced at the beginning of each heating and cooling season. For example, your cooling system should be serviced at the end of winter/ beginning of spring, and your heating system should be serviced at the end of summer/ beginning of fall.

How often should air filters be replaced?

Air filters should be replaced every 3 months or so. A simple rule of thumb is the more often you use your cooling system, the more often you should replace your filters.

Do bigger AC units work better?

Bigger doesn’t always equate to better when it comes to AC units. An AC unit that is too big for your home will actually run less efficiently, and will likely short cycle, which in turn leads to faster wear and tear on the unit.

When should I have my AC unit replaced?

Ideally, you should replace your aging AC unit before the system fails. With regular maintenance, AC units generally last about 15 to 20 years. Signs that indicate it’s time to search for a replacement include higher energy bills and regular refrigerant refills.

What is a mini-split system?

Unlike central air heating and cooling, which uses ducts, a mini-split system is a duct-free system. A mini-split system consists of an outdoor and indoor unit, which are connected via a small tube of refrigerant through the wall of your home. A mini-split system conditions one room or area of your home. Need mini-split maintenance or repairs? Contact us at 970.623.0152.

What does SEER mean?

SEER refers to Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the number, the more efficient your AC unit is. The current industry minimum for new ACs is 13, while state-of-the-art equipment can have a SEER as high as 21. High SEER ACs are initially more expensive, but due to their higher efficiency have lower monthly operating costs, which can you save you money in the long run.
